More New blood on the FPA of Miami Board!
Assistant Vice President, Investment Officer
Coral Gables Trust Company
As a young trader in Chicago, Michael Unger saw firsthand how self-directed investors lost money by trading aggressively, using improper asset allocation and picking inappropriate investments.
He didn’t like what he saw. “That’s really when I realized I wanted to be a planner; I wanted to properly educate clients,” says Unger, now assistant vice president and investment officer at Coral Gables Trust Company.
A 2012 graduate of the University of Miami, Unger moved back to South Florida in 2015 after a stint in Chicago and earned his Certified Financial Planner designation in 2018. He recently successfully completed the challenging Level 1 exam for the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation, too.
Unger says he was attracted by the Financial Planning Association’s adherence to ethical fiduciary standards. “I wanted to engage with the best and brightest in the industry and share techniques and strategies for our clients’ needs,” he says.
As a new member of the board of the Financial Planning Association of Miami, Unger is part of a new generation of financial planners who are dedicated to participating in elevating the profession. “I wanted to be part of something great,” he says. “It’s the gold standard of the retail side of the industry.”
As an investment officer at Coral Gables Trust Company, Unger helps manage $1.5 billion in assets. He assists clients by creating financial plans, monitoring portfolio’s, and reviewing their best-in-breed investment managers.
Recently married and living in Brickell, Unger is active with the University of Miami’s alumni associations.
